In honor of Oil month, we wanted to take some time to explain how to properly care for THC concentrate. Because who doesn’t want to conserve as much of that saucy terpene flavor as possible?

Did you know: Concentrates naturally degrade over time. Incorrect storage techniques could reduce the flavor of your dabs, as well as their shelf-life. Let’s touch on a few key reasons why concentrates can lose their profiles under the wrong conditions.

Oxygen

Leaving a concentrate jar open is the one of the fastest ways to lose quality in your concentrate. The airflow that passes through the jar will allow oxygen to degrade the oil and flavor- the color and viscosity degrade because of this. Some concentrates, like shatter, will be less affected by exposure but saucier extractions will be more vulnerable.

Just make sure after you hit that sweet dab - put the cap back on!

Heat

A common temperature for dabbing concentrate is between 400-450F, but the evaporation rates for most terpenes begin near 100F - with some as low as 70F.

This means leaving concentrate in a windowsill on a sunny summer day could result in profile changes for concentrates. Keeping your concentrates in a cool space under 70F is recommended for ideal storage. Refrigerator and freezer storage is possible (and ideal for long-term storage), but the container should be airtight to ensure no moisture can get inside with no excess of oxygen.

Humidity

Simply put, water and oil do not mix. If water settles into your jar and intermingles with the concentrate, the results could lead anywhere from a bad-tasting dab to a ruined banger/chamber since the boiling point of water is much lower than the concentrate.

Cool, Dark, Dry, Airtight

We recommend keeping concentrates in spaces that are about 70F - in a dark and dry area. Keep the jar in its original container to remain airtight or even add a zip-lock bag over it for storage to ensure no air passes through. Concentrates stored in the fridge should be in a drawer or similar zip-lock bag to reduce humidity and airflow.

Well, that’s all we have folks. Thanks for reading + let us know if we missed anything.
Happy Oil Month! Stay dabbing ~
